Greetings!
Welcome to the January issue of
Residue News! We hope the new year finds you refreshed and ready
to tackle your most pressing reliability issues.

A Look at Cross Sectional Analysis |
 |
|
Using the cover slide technique, cross sectioning allows us to
view weaknesses in an assembly that are nearly impossible to see
otherwise. With the capability to look at cross sections up to
1000x magnification, cross sectioning can study changes in
structural forms of the assembly materials. Often used in a
failure analysis investigation, cross sectioning allows you to see
small errors in production that can lead to costly field failures.

Destructive Testing for Reconstructing Processes |
 |
|
This article, published in
Circuits Assembly May 2005 issue, explores how cross
sectioning was able to identify the causes of cracks on ceramic
0805 capacitors. Not detected by acoustic micro-imaging, these
cracks were the result of thermal stress and larger than optimal
volumes of solder. Without changes to the production process, this
would have ultimately led to problems in the field. The article
also offers some suggestions for prevention and remediation.

|
Can You Identify this Problem? |
 |
|
Due to package settling during
solder attach, (caused by surface tension forces and low package
standoff height), the package shifted (right) on the PCB, filling
the adjacent solder mask windows with non-volatilized flux. (A
conductive residue.) This will eventually cause a parasitic or
electrical short and fail.

Foresite Licenses Aqueous Technologies to Sell C3
|
|
|
|
We are pleased to announce our partnership with Aqueous
Technologies. They are the exclusive worldwide distributor of C3,
our localized area tester, and will be showing it at APEX 2007 in
booth 1109. Aqueous Technologies is a leading manufacturer of
automated defluxing systems and cleanliness testing equipment for
the electronics industry. Foresite will continue to be the
technical support for the C3 and further develop the C3 to meet
even more industry needs. We look forward to a long relationship
with Aqueous Tech.
