Greetings!
Welcome to the April issue of Residue News!

A Look at Failure Analysis |
 |
|
When boards fail it is sometimes hard to immediately know the
reason why. Our Failure Analysis package allows you to find the
answers. Working with you, we utilize the data we receive from ion
chromatography, the C3, and/or cross sectioning, plus our many
years of knowledge and experience of contamination effects on
product reliability, to allow you to manufacture reliable product.

Let it Flow |
 |
|
Sometimes the cause of failures is not immediately known, as this
December 2005 Circuits Assembly case study shows. Utilizing
a number of investigative and testing techniques, Foresite was
able to fully identify and explain the problem – and offer an
effective solution to return product reliability.

Can You Identify this Problem? |

The photo shows a cross section view of CAF (conductive anondic
filament). This is not electrochemical migration but the formation
of a conductive copper filament that, when bridging between two
holes, will cause a short. When CAF occurs, large amounts of
sulfate residue from etch processes is found in these copper rich
areas. A CAF will form along weak inner boundary areas.

Meet Paco!
|
|
|
|
For those of you who have not already had the pleasure of meeting
Paco, he is one of our Lead Investigators and also our resident
cross-section specialist. Besides having an uncommonly fine touch
with cross-sectioning, his 23 years of laboratory experience,
along with 10 years of electronic assembly experience and four
years of package design experience, gives him the expertise you
need in every area of process residue analysis to assist you in
your projects. On the personal side, you may come to our lab and
happen upon a trail of Boy Scouts, Paco, in his scout uniform, and
his son Tyler leading the pack. Teaching and helping people are
two of his favorite pastimes, even after work. Paco received the
Medal of Merit from the Cub Scouts for saving the life of an
injured man he happened upon one night. Paco has an older son,
Cameron; daughter, Lizzie; and wife, Wendy, who is never seen
without a friendly smile for everyone. |
